John Deere 5050E Fuel System Problems

Drain Water and Sediment From Fuel Filters

  • Place a small container under the drain fitting to catch any leaking fuel.
  • Dispose of waste properly. Disconnect the wire harness connector.
  • Connect a small hose to the end of the drain plug.
  • Place a suitable container under the drain.
  • Open the drain plug to drain moisture and sediment from the fuel filter.
  • Tighten the drain plug when the fuel comes out clean.
  • Remove the drain hose and connect the wire harness connector.

Replace Fuel Filter / Water Separator

  • Service interval – 500 hours.
  • Connect a drain line to the drain port and place a suitable container under the drain.
  • Loosen the drain and drain the fuel from the filter.
  • Loosen the lower retaining ring.
  • Remove the container from the water separator.
  • Disconnect the wire harness.
  • Remove the fuel filter and filter gasket.
  • Discard the old filter.
  • Inspect the filter gasket for cracks, tears, or other signs of leaks.
  • Replace if necessary.
  • Clean and dry the water separator bowl.
  • Install the water separator bowl on the new primary fuel filter.
  • Tighten the retaining ring until it snaps into place.
  • Do not over-tighten.
  • Install the new primary fuel filter and filter gasket on the machine.
  • Tighten the retaining ring until it snaps into place. Do not over-tighten.
  • Connect the wire harness. Bleed the fuel system.
