John Deere 5050E - Air Filters Problems

Inspect Engine Air Intake Filters

  • A dual element air filter is standard.
  • A dirty primary element is indicated when the air filter restriction indicator on the instrument panel illuminates.
  • A dirty element causes a loss of power or excessive smoke.
  • Clean primary element when instrument panel indicator illuminates or every 250 hours.
  • Replace both items at the same time every year, regardless of their condition.
  • Raise the hood.
  • Release the latch and remove the side cover.
  • Rotate the primary filter element counterclockwise to remove it.
  • Do not use excessive force.
  • If the filter does not come out easily, check the unlock position to remove it safely.
  • Clean the primary element by tapping it gently on the palm of your hand.
  • DO NOT hit the item against a hard surface.
  • Clean the element by blowing compressed air (maximum pressure 1.3 Bar / 20 PSI).
  • Hold the nozzle close to the inner surface and move the pleats up and down.
  • Clean the dirt from the bowl being careful not to damage the secondary filter element.
  • The secondary filter element is only removed when it is replaced.
  • If it looks dirty or damaged do not try to clean it, replace it.
  • Disassembly of the secondary element is similar to that of the primary element.
  • Install the secondary filter element carefully and lock the filter by turning 1/4 turn clockwise.
  • If the primary filter is not damaged and the instrument panel indicator remains illuminated, replace both filters.
  • The installation of the primary filter element is similar to the installation of the secondary filter element.
  • Close the lid and lift the latch. Lower the deck.

Replace Engine Air Intake Filters

  • Raise the hood.
  • Release the latch and remove the cover from the side.
  • Rotate the primary element filter counterclockwise to remove it.
  • Do not use excessive force.
  • If the filter does not come out easily, move from side to side to remove it safely.
  • Removing the secondary filter is similar to that of the primary filter.
  • When installing the air filter cartridge, make sure the dust discharge valve is facing downward.
  • Install the new secondary filter element carefully and lock the filter by turning 1/4 turn clockwise.
  • The installation of the new primary filter element is similar to the installation of the secondary filter element.
  • Close the lid and lift the latch.
  • Make sure the arrow on the lid points up (it should not be exactly vertical up) and do not keep any gaps between the lid and the container.
  • Lower the deck.

John Deere 5050E Replace Air Cleaner Elements

  • Open the cover.
  • Release the clips.
  • Remove cover.
  • Remove the primary element by turning it counterclockwise.
  • Clean the dirt from the bowl being careful not to damage the secondary filter element.
  • Remove secondary element (inner element) ONLY if it is to be replaced.
  • DO NOT attempt to clean the secondary element.
  • If the secondary element is replaced, install the new element immediately to prevent dust from entering the air intake system.
  • Remove the secondary element.
  • When installing the air filter cartridge, make sure the dust discharge valve is facing downward.
  • Install the secondary element, primary element, and cap.
  • After installing the primary element, turn it clockwise to lock it in place.
  • Close the hood.

Clean Engine Crankcase Vent Tube

  • Service interval – 600 hours.
  • Locate the crankcase vent port on the top right of the engine.
  • Remove the crankcase breather tube from the open crankcase breather filter.
  • Wash it with solvent or clean it with compressed air.
  • Inspect tube for damage, replace if necessary.
  • Install the vent tube. Make sure the vent tube is not kinked or pinched.
