John Deere 5050D Alternator and Fan Belt Problems

Replace Alternator and Fan Belt

  • Loosen the cap screw and bolt and turn the alternator to release the belt.
  • Remove the belt from the drive pulley.
  • The strap can be pulled around the fan to remove it.
  • Install the new belt in the reverse order of removal.
  • Adjust the belt tension.

Inspect and Adjust Alternator/Fan Belt

  • Replace it if it is worn or damaged.
  • Run the engine for five minutes to warm up a cold belt.
  • Allow the hot strap to cool for 15 minutes before adjusting it.
  • Check the tension by pressing the belt halfway between the pulleys.
  • Belt deflects about 3/4 inch (19 mm) at 20 lbf (89 N).
  • Adjust the tension by loosening the cap screw and mounting bolt.
  • Apply force to the alternator frame until the belt tension is correct.
  • Tighten the cap screw and bolt.
